A sentimental Victorian love token, transformed from an everyday coin into a deeply personal keepsake. Generations after its creation, the love it represents still shines through.
Created using an 1844 Victorian sixpence, one side of the coin has been polished smooth before being hand enamelled with a beautiful yellow primrose. The skill and care involved in altering a coin in this way speaks to the affection and meaning the piece once held for its original owner.
The primrose was a flower rich in symbolism during the Victorian era. Within the language of flowers, it was associated with young love, devotion as well as the message -~ I cannot live without you. Due to this it became a popular motif in sentimental jewellery, often exchanged between sweethearts as a token of affection.
The bright yellow enamel flower stands out beautifully against the silver surface of the coin. Unlike many love tokens which were simply engraved with initials or messages, this example has been transformed into a miniature work of art, carrying its sentiment through symbolism rather than words.
